FINAL PROJECT PROPOSAL

Multimedia and Human Computer Interaction:

Defense of the Castle

1. What is it?

It was generally agreed upon that Atari’s arcade Tower Defense game Rampart was the first tower defense game. However, this new genre of game didn’t really lift off to fame until around 2007 when other tower defense games such as: Flash Element Tower Defense, Desktop Tower, Defense and Bloons Tower Defense began dominating the popular flash game sites (www.wired.com). Ever since then, this redefined genre of gaming rose to fame that it clearly deserved with new innovation appearing left and right. Now players can do all sorts of actions, players can add vehicles, troops, artilleries, and many others. Changing their style of gameplay to deal with different enemies and terrains. Now all this is beautiful and awesome, but it surely gets boring.

BUT our group plans to make a game that follows along the same genre however with a splash and dash of our own unique touch. Let us explain in our next segment

2. Game mechanics

We have created a new kind of tower defense game called: Defense of the Castle. And it’s not ordinary tower defense game, now what makes it different from the rest? Well first, let me explain how to the game works.

When the game starts, the player will be greeted by a start menu screen. Then the player will click the start button and then the player will be transported to another screen, the map. The map will consist of the castle health bar, the monsters present, and the money (gold) they have. They will also have their hero on the screen and the path leading to the castle where the monsters will go through. In the first wave, the player will be given 15 seconds to strategize their game, their next move to defend the castle.

The player can move the hero to the forts, littered around map (not touching the path), so that the player can start building the weaponry and artillery (towers) they need to defend their castle. So only when the hero is on the fort that then, they can start building their defense. The hero will have mana that will be used for various kind of action such as: skills to slow down the monsters. Each skill will have different mana usage and cool down and the mana will increase by 1 every second.

Depending on the strength and difficulty of the enemy, every monster killed the player will get money (gold). Now the gold can be used to buy and build more towers, upgrade their towers, repair the castle, and upgrade the castle.

There are various kinds of monsters including:

  1. Flying monsters so they have aerial attacks
  2. Speed monsters so they move very quickly through the path leading to the castle
  3. Heavy monsters so they will be very difficult to kill because of its high health capacity
  4. Heavy attack monsters that will give a lot of damage if and when they reach the castle
  5. Light monsters (for early waves).

In order to be able to kill and attack these monsters, there are different kinds of towers to accommodate. Here is a list of the tower types:

  1. Normal tower – ground tower, high speed, medium range, low damage, and single target
  2. Splash tower – ground tower, medium speed, low range, medium damage and aoe damage
  3. Long range tower – ground tower, low speed, long range, high damage, single target
  4. Air tower – high speed, long range, high damage, air target
  5. Ice tower – ground tower, medium speed, medium range, super low damage, slow enemies
